Garlic is used in recipes around the world for its mouthwatering aroma and rich flavours. Allicin, the substance in garlic that also gives it the aroma, has several health benefits to offer. Certain methods of preparation can both improve the flavour and health benefits of garlic. To preserve the health advantages of garlic while cooking with it, there are several rules to go by.

In an Instagram post, nutritionist Moomal Asif shared ‘the 10-minute garlic rule’. “Did you know that TWO MINUTES in the frying pan destroys all the health benefits of Garlic?” she wrote in the caption. She continued that garlic has a well-deserved reputation for being healthy. The antioxidant content in garlic is high, and it has potent antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

However, nutritionist adds that when heat is applied to garlic, the most active ingredient gets almost completely deactivated. She suggested that by making a small change in the cooking technique, the health benefits of garlic can be preserved.

Sharing a recipe on how to cook garlic, she added, “Crush, chop or mince garlic and keep it away from heat for 10 minutes. During this time the maximum allicin is created and stays intact during cooking. You can then fry, saute, bake to your heart’s content and still get all its medicine”.
